All procedures carry risks. Our Ear Nurses has received intense and thorough training and is committed to deliver a safe and efficient service. Complications due to microsuctioning is rare but should be noted. Possible complications, side-effects and risks include:
Discomfort during the procedure - commonly due to impaction of wax into the deeper canal and may require softening and a return visit to remove successfully.
Risk of injury - sometimes we are not able to safely perform the procedure due to concerns regarding injury when the client is not able to comply/hold still due to their age/anxiety/medical conditions. In these cases the Ear Nurse will not proceed with the procedure as the risks outweighs the benefits. Alternative options will be discussed if this happens.
Dizziness - some people experience dizziness during the procedure usually due to ear wax sitting in the deeper ear canal close to the eardrum. This usually dissipates soon after the wax is removed. If you have previously experienced dizziness during microsuctioning please let the Ear Nurse know beforehand.
Tinnitus and Hearing Loss - during microsuctioning a loud noise can be generated in the ear canal due to the suction. In some people this can cause hearing loss (temporary or permanent) and tinnitus (ringing type noise inside the ear) or worsening of pre-existing tinnitus. This is not something we can predict, our Ear Nurses has been trained to mitigate the risk of this complication by limiting the time and loudness of the suction noise to as little as possible. For this reason our suction pumps are especially suited with a special system of noise and vibration dampening. They provide an extremely quiet and smooth operation with an incredibly low noise level of 39,4 dB. We also encourage all or clients to say “STOP” if they experience any discomfort including discomfort induced by noise. It is advised that if you have previously experienced tinnitus or loss of hearing during or after microsuctioning to inform the Ear Nurse at the start of your consultation to discuss an alternative approach.
Injury - it is not normal or expected to experience pain or bleeding during or after having your ears microsuctioned. An unskilled hand and poorly suited equipment is mostly responsible for this complication. The gold standard for examining ears and performing microsuctioning is using a surgical microscope which is what we do.
