Ear wax removal

Ear wax is a natural product of the ear canal cleaning itself. Ears are designed to be self cleaning but for some this does not occur adequately enough.

Wax removal is indicated in the following cases:

  • causing a blocked feeling that affects your hearing

  • causing ear pain

  • causing itching or discomfort

  • obscuring the view of the eardrum

  • affecting hearing aid function

  • before flying or diving to prevent the wax from being pushed onto your eardrum

  • frequent water exposure as this may result in ear canal infection

  • before your hearing test as ear wax can affect your results

Our Ear Nurses use different instruments to remove earwax. The most essential tool is a surgical microscope that allows the nurse to have a 10 time magnified view. Removing the wax can be done by using a small suction tube and/or other small instruments under direct view of your ear.
